Plot summary
Giacomo Casanova has no money left after many years of wandering from place to place in Europe, and he is aging. He wants to see Venice again, the republic he left as a fugitive, and he does not dare return openly, so he searches for a way to get a pardon. On that search he meets Marcolina, a young woman he courts. She makes a show of rejecting him, and the more affection he shows, the more ostentatiously she turns him away. Casanova also learns that Marcolina's lover, Lorenzi, has serious gambling debts. He does not give up on her.
