Plot summary
East German military capture Lucas Martino, an American scientist who worked on a top-secret project in the West, after his car crashes near their border. Their scientists rebuild his scarred face with metal implants to save him, and he is handed back to the United States wearing a steel mask, claiming to be Martino. The people who knew him cannot confirm it, so American authorities keep him in custody while they investigate. Sean Rogers, an intelligence specialist, has to establish whether the man is the scientist they lost or an impostor sent to gather details about the Western rocket program.
