Plot summary
Bridie Quilty grows up in Ireland hearing her father's tales of the Irish Revolution, and she comes to hate everything British, Oliver Cromwell most of all. By 1944 her father is dead, and Bridie, twenty-one, sets out for Dublin hoping to join the IRA. Aboard the train to Dublin she meets J. Miller, a businessman who has come back from abroad and is in fact a German agent. He recruits her, and she takes work at a hotel and bar, where she becomes acquainted with a sergeant.

- While I See a Dark Stranger was in production, crew members gossiped that cinematographer Wilkie Cooper and star Deborah Kerr had grown close; Kerr married Spitfire pilot Tony Bartley almost immediately after the film was finished.
- The Charters and Caldicott characters Frank Launder and Sidney Gilliat introduced in The Lady Vanishes were set to appear again, but a disagreement with their actors, Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne, led to them being replaced by Captain Goodhusband and Lieutenant Spanswick.
