Plot summary
Edmond Dantès is a young sailor preparing to marry Mercédès. Three scheming men move against him, one of them because he wants Mercédès for himself, and Dantès is sent to prison on a charge he did not commit. He is held in an island fortress that was meant to hold prisoners forever. Among the prisoners is the Abbé Faria, who takes him as a pupil.

- Producer Norman Rosemont first tried to sell The Count of Monte Cristo as a mini series but could not, so he instead signed a deal with NBC for a TV movie, which still got a theatrical release in Europe. Its budget was one and a half million dollars.
- Richard Chamberlain agreed to star as Edmond Dantès because he thought it was "a great story", and he chose not to watch earlier film versions of the novel so he would not copy them even unconsciously.
