Plot summary
In 1878, Second Lieutenant Arthur Drake and Second Lieutenant Edward Millington arrive in India to join a British regiment. Drake's father served in the regiment before him and he wants to fit in; Millington, a general's son, means to fail his probation and antagonizes the officers. Their arrival falls on the commemoration of the Battle of Rajapur, when the widow Marjorie Scarlett is presented with her husband's Victoria Cross and returns it. Lieutenant Richard Fothergill briefs the newcomers on the regiment's rules and warns them off Mrs. Scarlett's favors. At a dance Millington, drunk, follows her into the garden; she repels him and soon runs back wounded, naming him. The regiment holds a private hearing, and Millington asks Drake to defend him. Drake is pressed to plead him guilty but insists on a fair trial.
