Plot summary
Peter Penrose is a new and inexperienced pilot who has flown Bristol Blenheims for fifteen hours when he joins No. 720 Squadron. The squadron flies from RAF Halfpenny Field in the summer of 1940, under Squadron Leader Carter, and Penrose is assigned to B Flight under Flight Lieutenant David Archdale. The airmen's war opens with the Battle of Britain. In the town nearby he meets Iris Winterton, who lives at the Golden Lion Hotel with her domineering aunt, Miss Winterton. The hotel's manager, Miss Todd, known to everyone as Toddy, is a familiar figure to the airmen. Penrose courts Iris, though her aunt disapproves. Archdale writes poetry and marries Toddy.
