Plot summary
A speck of grit in her eye is how Laura Jesson first meets Alec Harvey, in the refreshment room of Milford Junction station while she waits for her train. She is a housewife who comes to Milford each Thursday to shop and take in a film; he is a doctor who does his hospital rounds there the same day. The next week they fall into conversation again on the street, and the week after that they share lunch and a film. Neither expected a casual friendship to grow, but the Thursdays come to matter to them both. Each has a spouse and children, and each feels bound to the family they already have. They keep the meetings hidden from the people they know in Milford.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Brief Encounter (1945)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Roger Livesey was the original choice to play Alec Harvey, but David Lean cast Trevor Howard after seeing him in The Way to the Stars; Joyce Barbour was replaced as Dolly by Everley Gregg when Lean was dissatisfied with her performance.
- Much of Brief Encounter was shot at Carnforth railway station in Lancashire, picked because the busy junction was far enough from major cities to escape wartime blackout rules, allowing filming in early 1945 before World War II had ended.
- Carnforth station, where much of Brief Encounter was filmed, still keeps many of its period features and has become a place of pilgrimage for fans of the film.
