Plot summary
The flying-bomb raids of 1944 bring casualties far from London, among them a postman named Joseph Higgins, who arrives unconscious at a rural British hospital with nothing to identify him. Mr. Eden operates, Nurse Linley assists, and Dr. Barnes gives the anesthetic. Higgins dies during what should have been a minor procedure, and even full oxygen does not help. Inspector Cockrill of Scotland Yard opens a report on the case. For Barnes the death repeats an earlier one he was caught up in and could not explain. Five of the hospital's medical staff fall under the inspector's eye: Dr. Barnes, Mr. Eden, Nurse Linley, Nurse Sanson and Nurse Woods, any of whom could have killed the postman.
