Biography
Simon McBurney is an English actor, playwright and director of theater and opera who founded the London company Complicité, where he is artistic director. Born in Cambridge, he studied English literature at Cambridge before training in Paris under Philippe Gaulier and at the Jacques Lecoq Institute. He directed Complicité productions including Street of Crocodiles, Mnemonic and A Disappearing Number, and he won the Europe Prize Theatrical Realities in 1997 with the company, an Olivier Award for choreography in 1998, and appointment as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2005. His screen work ranges from The Manchurian Candidate (2004), The Last King of Scotland (2006) and The Golden Compass (2007) to Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011), The Theory of Everything (2014), the Mission: Impossible film Rogue Nation (2015) and Nosferatu (2024). He directed Mozart's The Magic Flute for the English National Opera and the Metropolitan Opera.
