Biography

Toby Stephens is an English actor who trained at LAMDA and began his film career playing Othello in Sally Potter's Orlando in 1992. Born in London to the actors Maggie Smith and Robert Stephens, he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company soon after graduating, playing the title role in Coriolanus and Claudio in Measure for Measure. On screen he is known as the Bond villain Gustav Graves in Die Another Day (2002), a performance that earned him a Saturn Award nomination, and as Edward Rochester in the BBC's 2006 Jane Eyre. He played Orsino in Trevor Nunn's Twelfth Night (1996), a British officer in Sharpe's Challenge (2006) and Tony Blair in The Journey (2017), and starred as Captain Flint in Black Sails from 2014 to 2017 and John Robinson in Lost in Space from 2018 to 2021.
