Plot summary

The residents of Kilkenny clear the nearby woods on the orders of the Lord Protector, whose rule sets the town against a local wolf pack. Bill Goodfellowe, an English hunter, is summoned to exterminate the wolves, and his daughter Robyn follows him into the forest with her falcon, Merlyn. Robyn accidentally shoots Merlyn with her crossbow, and a girl carries the bird away. Robyn follows, finds her falcon healed, and meets Mebh, a Wolfwalker whose sleeping spirit takes the shape of a wolf. Mebh's mother Moll has not come back from searching for a new home for the pack. Robyn tries to convince Bill that Wolfwalkers are real, and he scolds her for entering the forest.

Kilkenny and its inhabitants were drawn in a style inspired by 17th-century woodcuts, with thick lines and angular shapes suggesting the town's cage-like rules, while the forest and wolfwalkers use sketchy, curving, expressive linework. Robyn's design begins as woodblock and shifts to the forest's pencil lines as she identifies with the wolfwalkers.
Wolfwalkers was animated primarily by hand in TVPaint, with digital brushes used to imitate physical pencil lines, backgrounds drawn and painted on paper, and some crowds and background elements animated with Moho.
Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart took inspiration from the rough animation of The Tale of the Princess Kaguya and the Xeroxed animation of One Hundred and One Dalmatians, which preserved the animators' pencil art, wanting Wolfwalkers to look "really, really rough and scratchy."
