Plot summary
In nineteenth-century Paris, Adeline Hulot lies dying while her husband, Baron Hector Hulot, has spent the family fortune on mistresses and debts. Her cousin Bette, an aging spinster, has supported the Hulots for years with little in return, and she vows to Adeline that she will look after the family, above all Adeline's unmarried daughter, Hortense. As girls the two were poor, and the family chose to marry off the beautiful Adeline and leave Bette behind. Expecting at last to be welcomed, Bette is offered instead a post as the family's unpaid housekeeper. She returns to her small apartment, makes costumes for a burlesque theater, befriends its star, the courtesan Jenny Cadine, and takes in a starving sculptor in her building, Wenceslas Steinbach, giving him money and guidance.
