Plot summary
In Cambridge in 1963, postgraduate astrophysics student Stephen Hawking meets Jane Wilde, who studies medieval Spanish poetry. His friends and fellow academics worry that he has not settled on a thesis topic. Stephen attends Roger Penrose's lecture on black holes and comes away thinking they could be connected to how the universe began, which becomes his subject. Then his coordination starts to fail. A bad fall leads to a diagnosis of motor neuron disease, a progressive degenerative condition with no treatment; the doctor tells him his mind will not be affected but gives him roughly two years. Depressed, Stephen withdraws into his work. Jane tells him she loves him and intends to stay, and they marry.

- Hawking gave the film his blessing, and his response was so positive that he offered to lend his voice: the voice heard in the latter part of the story is in fact Stephen's actual electronic voice as he uses it.
- In the film it is explained that Stephen's voice is taken from an answering machine; it is actually the voice of Dr Dennis H. Klatt.
- McCarten was introduced to producer Lisa Bruce through a mutual ICM agent in 2009, and Bruce then spent three years with him convincing Jane Hawking to agree to a film adaptation of her book: it was a lot of conversation, many glasses of sherry, and many pots of tea.
- The Slate article noted that the character Brian, Hawking's closest friend at Cambridge in the film, is not based on a real individual but rather a composite of several of his real-life friends.
