Plot summary
Georgiana Spencer becomes Duchess of Devonshire in 1774, when she marries the Duke. The Georgian era is a time of fashion, decadence and political change, and she is spirited and adored by the public. Her marriage, however, proves a disappointment. She must produce a male heir, while the Duke philanders and shows her callous indifference. When she gives birth to a girl, the Duke is displeased. She meets Lady Bess Foster at Bath and asks her to move in, as Bess has no other place to stay. Georgiana rises to prominence in fashionable society, and her extravagant political and personal life draws both adoration and revulsion.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The duchess the film portrays was a distant relation of Diana, Princess of Wales: she was the older sister of Lady Diana's great-great-great-grandfather, George Spencer, 2nd Earl Spencer, and the poster line "There were three people in her marriage" comes from Diana.
- Studio executives wanted to use digitally altered images of Keira Knightley in promotional materials, with the alterations specifically aimed at enlarging her breasts; Knightley objected to them and they were not used.
