Plot summary
Jess Harker has no patience left for the chances his hometown offers, and he looks up to Race Crim, a stagecoach man on the main line. Driving that route is the work Jess wants. Luke Bowen, who runs the coach company, does not believe the young man is ready, but Race asks him to give Jess the chance, and Jess is picked to guard the next coach out of Red Rock. That coach is carrying twenty-seven thousand dollars in gold dust and two passengers, one of them Waco, the saloon girl Race loves. Before the run, Race gives Jess a whip with a silver handle to bring him luck.
