Plot summary
In 1967, Austin Powers is a British secret agent whose charm and hedonism leave his nemesis, Dr. Evil, unable to win. Dr. Evil has himself cryogenically frozen, planning to return once greed rules the world, and Austin volunteers for the same treatment so he can face him again. Both wake in 1997. Dr. Evil finds that much of what he once plotted has already happened, while his lieutenant Number Two has built the criminal front Virtucon into a corporate giant. Dr. Evil demands $100 billion from the world, and he meets Scott, the teenage son he fathered from stored sperm, who resents him. Austin is revived by the British Ministry of Defence and paired with agent Vanessa Kensington, whose mother was his old partner. She is unimpressed by his attitude, and the two go undercover together.

- Mike Myers said that after his father died in 1991 he reflected on his influence, and called Austin a tribute to him: his father had introduced him to James Bond, Peter Sellers, the Beatles, The Goodies, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore.
- Myers initially did not intend to play multiple characters in the film and sought Jim Carrey to play Dr. Evil. Carrey was interested in the role but had to decline because of scheduling conflicts with Liar Liar.
- Dana Carvey, Myers' collaborator on Saturday Night Live and the Wayne's World movies, felt Dr. Evil was copied from his own impression of long-time SNL executive producer Lorne Michaels, and was unhappy about it; Myers has denied Michaels was the inspiration.
- Daniel Craig, who played James Bond from 2006 to 2021, credited the Austin Powers films with the more serious tone of later Bond entries, saying in a 2014 interview that Mike Myers had made it impossible to do the gags the earlier films relied on.
- Rhea Perlman turned down the role of Frau Farbissina and Colin Quinn turned down the role of Scott Evil, and both later expressed regret for declining Austin Powers.
