Plot summary
The Eberhardts have just moved from Montana to Coconut Cove, Florida, and Roy starts at a new middle school, where Dana Matherson teases and bullies him. On the bus Roy struggles free of Dana's grip and breaks his nose; his punishment is two weeks off the bus and an apology letter that Dana refuses to accept. Roy becomes friends with Beatrice Leep, known as The Bear, and her stepbrother Mullet Fingers. Meanwhile someone keeps sabotaging the site of a planned Mother Paula's Pancake House, and the police car Officer David Delinko parks there to guard it is spray-painted black overnight. Roy learns that the burrowing owls on the lot would have to be killed before the restaurant can be built, while the foreman, Curly, faces pressure from regional manager Chuck Muckle to keep construction on schedule.

- Hoot held on at number 10 for its second week, then broke a record set by Gigli for the biggest drop in cinemas screening a film, losing 2,200 screens and coming in at number 19 on its third weekend.
- Hoot topped The Seeker for the number one worst "super-saturated" opening, meaning 3,000-plus screens, in the United States and Canada, a record it held until The Rhythm Section took it; Hoot opened in almost 42% of all screens.
- Hoot was shot during the summer months and the set did not escape Hurricane Katrina, which struck Southern Florida on 25 August 2005; Brie Larson and Cody Linley were moved from their beach-front hotel to another hotel because of the storm.
- The prints needed for Hoot's wide opening would have cost twice its $15 million production budget, making it more expensive to distribute than to produce; the film entered the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in 2009.
- Robert Donner appeared as Kalor in what turned out to be his final film role; the actor died on 8 June 2006.
- Logan Lerman, who played the lead role of Roy Eberhardt, won a Young Artist Award in early 2007 for Best Performance in a Feature Film by a Leading Young Actor.
