Plot summary
Frank Capua is a fast-rising driver on the race circuit, and winning the Indianapolis 500 is what he wants. He meets Elora, a divorcee, and a whirlwind romance leads to marriage. Charley, the teenage son Elora has from her first husband, grows close to Frank and works with him on the cars before races. Frank gives himself to his career, and that dedication takes him away from Elora. Luther Erding, Frank's teammate and the driver he races against most, is part of the same world. Frank's push toward the Indianapolis 500 puts a strain on his marriage and on his bond with Charley.

- Paul Newman was trained for the film's racing by drivers Bob Sharp and Lake Underwood, which sparked a lifelong love of the sport: he later launched Newman/Haas Racing with Carl Haas, winning more than 100 races and 8 IndyCar Driver's Championships but never the Indianapolis 500.
- The film's Indianapolis Motor Speedway footage is real race footage: most of it comes from the 1968 race, while the crash at the first green flag is taken from the 1966 race.
- The opening of the film's theme, "500 Miles", was reused as the theme for WEWS-TV in Cleveland's Million Dollar Movie in the 1970s and 1980s, and for TVG's syndicated college basketball telecasts in the early 1970s.
