Plot summary

The Pink Panther diamond is stolen in Lugash. Inspector Clouseau vanishes, and the Surete runs Operation Paragon, using the Huxley 600 computer Aldous to name the world's greatest detective for the case. Chief Inspector Charles Dreyfus, hoping never to hear from Clouseau again, sabotages the machine so it picks the world's worst detective instead. The choice is Sergeant Clifton Sleigh of the New York Police Department, an incompetent officer who sees the assignment as his chance to prove himself. Dreyfus and his assistant, Sergeant François Duval, discover that Sleigh is as clumsy as Clouseau. On the trail, Sleigh meets people who would rather Clouseau stay missing, among them Clouseau's former manservant Cato and a mafia boss.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Curse of the Pink Panther (1983)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • This was David Niven's final film. His scenes, along with those of Capucine and Robert Wagner, were shot at Victorine Studios in Nice, and because his health was failing his voice was dubbed in post-production by impressionist Rich Little.
  • Edwards's first choice for the new detective was Dudley Moore, who had been in negotiations to play Inspector Clouseau in the previous film but turned it down after the success of Arthur (1981). Rowan Atkinson and John Ritter were considered before Edwards cast Ted Wass, having enjoyed his performance in Soap.
  • With President Ronald Reagan's daughter Patti Davis in the cast, the production in Valencia was guarded by the United States Secret Service and the Spanish National Police Corps.
  • Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer pushed the release from spring 1983 back to August with virtually no newspaper or television promotion. Edwards sued the studio for $180 million in September 1983 for willfully sabotaging the film, MGM sued him for alleged fraudulent overspending, and Edwards then sued MGM for defamation of character.
  • SPOILERClouseau turning to a life of crime and living with a criminal countess was borrowed from Peter Sellers' unfilmed Romance of the Pink Panther script, whose second draft had Clouseau leaving the force to join his new wife, the archcriminal "The Frog".
