Plot summary

Peter Joseph Bullis, called Peejoe, is a boy in a small Alabama town in 1965, during the Civil Rights Movement. His aunt Lucille Vinson has suffered years of domestic violence from her husband Chester, and she escapes from him, driving off alone. She buys a hat box in New Orleans and continues toward Hollywood, where she hopes to become a television actress. Peejoe watches Black students enter the town's segregated swimming pool in protest, and sees Sheriff John Doggett pull a young Black boy, Taylor Jackson, from a fence.
