Plot summary
Miriam Halsworth has begun divorce proceedings against her husband Hugh after twenty years of marriage, and his gambling is the cause. Their grown daughter Barbara shares the family house with Miriam, Barbara's husband Jerry Denham and their baby Annabelle, while Hugh rooms at a Santa Monica hotel where his job is publicity and Jerry also works. Barbara will not move out, since she does not want her mother left on her own. Hugh still comes by often to tend the rosebushes he prizes. Victor Macfarland, a millionaire financier said to be in line for a post with the International Monetary Fund, is staying at the same hotel. He and Hugh were rivals for Miriam back in high school, and she has had no news of him in the twenty years since he left town.
