Plot summary
Alice Jordan and Martin, her husband, bring their three children to Pitcombe, a quiet English village, and the family settles into a new home. Cecily, Martin's mother, is a well-known writer of books about English gardens; she once painted, though she has not worked at that for some time. Alice finds her overbearing. Sir Ralph Unwin, the local landowner, and his wife invite the Jordans to dinner, where Alice meets their daughter Clodagh, lately home from New York after a scandal. The family soon learns that a village this size keeps few secrets, and finds the idea amusing. Martin turns his attention to Clodagh, but Clodagh's interest settles on Alice.
