Plot summary
Walter Eastwood rules his household: his wife Edith, an artist, and their teenage daughter Jane, whom he belittles and abuses. His son Rupert shares his misogyny, declining to collect art supplies for Edith when she asks and scorning the notion that Jane might take a job, since her father gives her no allowance. One evening a friend of Walter's, Gregson, arrives at the family's estate, and Jane greets him at the door. She tells her father afterward that Gregson attempted to kiss her. Once the meal is over, Walter discovers that Jane has taken money from him and thrashes her with a cane. The next day Edith raises with Jane the idea of putting Walter to death. Walter then arranges a hunting trip to a cottage in a remote spot, and Edith and Jane choose to stay at home.
