Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Satan's Slave (1976)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- While filming on a hill near an Army base, the production of Satan's Slave was surrounded by soldiers on a training exercise, and noise from the base's firing range forced the schedule to change. For the car-explosion scene the crew were allowed to film on the base, and the Army then used the wreckage for target practice before disposing of it.
- Satan's Slave was paid for with its producers' own money: Richard Crafter sold his shares in Mothercare, and Les Young sold his car and mortgaged his home and his film equipment company, Crystal Film Productions, to fund it.
- The filmmakers could not afford Michael Gough's usual fee, but he accepted the role of Alexander after Norman J. Warren talked him through the film in his National Theatre dressing room, on condition it would not interrupt his stage commitments.
- A camera tied to a bungee cord was dropped from the roof of the 23-story building to create a "falling" point-of-view shot, and Les Young also performed the car crash stunt.
SPOILER
Re-shoots were held to improve Satan's Slave's distribution prospects in the Far East, raising the levels of gore and nudity, including a more explicit version of a scene in which Stephen nearly rapes and then brutally murders a young woman called Janice, played by Gloria Walker.- Norman J. Warren cut out complete scenes where characters explained things because he found the plot "very complicated, and actually rather boring", and admitted a lot of Satan's Slave does not make sense because of those cuts.
- With no money for a house that already had furniture in it, production designer Hayden Pearce found a mock-Tudor house in Pirbright, and its grounds contained an electrical substation the crew used for power instead of generators.
- John Scott's score was recorded in a single session with seven instrumentalists, the largest ensemble the budget would allow, and features clarinet and gongs with piano, xylophone, xylorimba and vibraphone.
