Plot summary
Peter Manning goes to Greymarsh to buy antiques and writes to his brother Robert that he will soon be home. Then he disappears, and Robert, an antiques dealer, travels to Greymarsh, the town their ancestors came from. At Craxted Lodge he walks into a party hosted by Eve Morley, whose uncle owns the house. Morley says he does not remember Peter, though Robert's letter is written on Craxted Lodge paper, and he invites Robert to stay and search. That night Robert dreams of Lavinia Morley, the witch of Greymarsh. Professor John Marsh, an expert on the occult, tells him of a witchcraft cult that Lavinia once led, and Eve joins Robert's search.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Curse of the Crimson Altar (1968)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- A week before filming began on Curse of the Crimson Altar, director Vernon Sewell was told Boris Karloff was uninsurable and that Christopher Lee would take his place. When the producers found they still had to pay Karloff, the script was rewritten so Karloff played the good man and Lee the villain.
- Boris Karloff, over eighty and in poor health, shot two night scenes at the end of his work on the film and caught a cold, spending several days in a private clinic. Producer Tony Tenser's Tigon, fearing the film would be billed "the film that killed Boris Karloff", put out a quote saying he caught bronchitis in Hollywood, not England.
- Craxted Lodge in the film is Grim's Dyke, the allegedly haunted former home of William S. Gilbert in Harrow Weald, Middlesex, now a hotel. It stood in for both exterior and interior shots, and its interiors were so dilapidated that they needed an extensive refit.
- Curse of the Crimson Altar was shot in the middle of winter, so extra fan heaters had to be installed to keep the dressing rooms warm enough for the actors. Christopher Lee said that despite Tigon's best efforts he spent the whole picture shivering from cold.
