Plot summary
Gabriel Broughton's relatives gather at Blackshaw Towers, an isolated country house on the Yorkshire moors, to hear his will read. Ernest Broughton, his nervous nephew, brings his flatmate Syd Butler for support. Among the family waiting there are Guy, Ernest's alcoholic cousin; Malcolm, who plays the piano; Janet and her father, Dr. Edward Broughton; and Aunt Emily. Gabriel's nurse, Linda Dixon, is also present. The solicitor, Everett Sloane, tells them Gabriel has left them nothing, apart from his medicines and syringe for Linda.
