Plot summary
Anna's husband, Alexei Karenin, is a government official in St Petersburg whose mind is on his career. Her brother Stepan Oblonsky calls her to Moscow; he has repeatedly been unfaithful to his wife Dolly. On the night train Anna meets Countess Vronsky, and the two talk about their sons. The Countess shows her a picture of her son, the cavalry officer Vronsky, and he comes to the station to meet his mother. He is taken with Anna at once and lets his interest be known; she pushes it away, though not emphatically. At a grand ball he keeps pursuing her in front of the watching guests. Kitty Shcherbatsky, Dolly's sister, who turned down Konstantin Levin for Vronsky, leaves the ball humiliated.
