Plot summary
Philip Hopkins is the grandson of Howard Anderson, who owns a hotel chain and once hunted. Jacques Müller, an international criminal, and his girlfriend Louise Andrews intend to abduct the boy. Louise takes a job as a maid in the household of Philip's mother Ruth and persuades the chauffeur, Dave Averconnelly, to help. On the chosen day Müller draws Howard and Ruth out of the house while Louise and Dave seize Philip. The boy slips away briefly to fetch a pet snake, and the animal goes astray; the black mamba intended for Dr. Marion Stowe, a toxicologist, arrives in its place. Howard comes home early, and the snake escapes.

- Klaus Kinski chose to appear in Venom instead of Raiders of the Lost Ark because the salary was higher; in his autobiography Kinski Uncut he called the script for the Spielberg film "moronically shitty".
- Director Piers Haggard called Venom "a very unhappy film", saying Klaus Kinski was the problem and that Oliver Reed spent half the shoot trying to wind him up, which led to shouting matches.
- Tobe Hooper was originally attached to direct Venom but quit because of "creative differences", and Piers Haggard replaced him.
