Lee Grant
Biography
Lee Grant is an American actress, director, and documentarian. Born in Manhattan, she began performing as a child in stage ballet and joined the American Ballet as a teenager. She made her Broadway debut in Joy to the World in 1948 and broke through as the shoplifter in Detective Story, reprising the role in the 1951 film, which earned her an Academy Award nomination and the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress. After returning to prominence on the television series Peyton Place, she won a Primetime Emmy, then appeared in films such as In the Heat of the Night (1967), Valley of the Dolls (1967), The Landlord (1970), and Shampoo (1975), winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Shampoo. She later moved into directing, winning a Directors Guild of America Award for Nobody's Child and an Academy Award for the documentary Down and Out in America.
