Ian Hendry

Biography

Ian Hendry was an English actor who appeared in several British television series in the 1960s and 1970s, playing the lead in the debut season of The Avengers and later in The Lotus Eaters. Born in Ipswich, Suffolk, he trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London from 1953 to 1955 and began professional acting in repertory in 1955. His early screen roles included Room at the Top (1958) and Live Now Pay Later (1962), which earned him a BAFTA nomination for Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles. He went on to appear in The Hill (1965), Repulsion (1965), Journey to the Far Side of the Sun (1969), Get Carter (1971), Theatre of Blood (1973), The Passenger (1975), and Damien: Omen II (1978). He received a second BAFTA nomination, for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, for Get Carter. Other television work included Police Surgeon, The Informer, and Brookside.

Big break
Hendry was the star of the first season of The Avengers as Dr David Keel, but a strike curtailed production and he left to begin a film career, after which Patrick Macnee's Steed led the series.
A change of course
In 1949 Hendry started National Service under the United Kingdom's postwar conscription program. He served two years with the 32nd Medium Regiment, Royal Artillery, pacing Christopher Chataway in athletics and running a motorcycle stunt team.
