Plot summary
Nick Stark has watched progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy claim friends of his, and now a CT scan and lab results confirm the same diagnosis in him. Because the disease advances quickly and will leave him unable to recognize the people he loves, he decides to end his own life while he is still himself. He announces the plan to his parents and to the friends he calls his extended family, and arranges a two-day party so they can all be together one last time. Brandon Theis, the lover who left Nick after the HIV diagnosis, arrives without an invitation, and guests who believe he abandoned Nick greet him with jeers.

- To get It's My Party made, director Randal Kleiser told Disney he would helm Honey, I Blew Up the Kid if the studio let him make an adult film next; when Disney balked at the project, Kleiser took it to John Calley at United Artists, who agreed after seeing photos of the real party.
- The film is based on the true events of the death of Harry Stein, an architect and designer who was director Randal Kleiser's ex-lover; the farewell party that inspired the story was held in 1992.
