Plot summary
The Hamburg-America Line advertises a crossing to Cuba in May 1939, and 937 people, nearly all of them Jews, buy passage out of Nazi Germany. They hold tourist visas and intend to remain once they land, and friends and relatives wait for them in Havana. Feelings on board differ: some are glad of their freedom, some grieve at leaving the country they call home, and some resent accepting anything from their persecutors. Among the crew are men who sympathize with the Nazi Party and dislike serving Jewish passengers, while Captain Schroeder, who takes no part in politics, does what he can for the safety and comfort of those in his charge. Antisemitism, in part fueled by the Nazis, is sweeping the western hemisphere, and how Havana will receive the ship is uncertain.

In 1998, Scott Miller and Sarah Ogilvie of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum traced the survivors of the voyage and concluded that 254 of the refugees, 40.9 percent, were murdered by the Nazis.- The film was shot aboard the chartered Italian ocean liner Irpinia, which was fitted with two false funnels to pass for the St. Louis, and on location in Barcelona, Spain, standing in for Cuba.
