Plot summary
Wounded in a bank holdup in the days after Christmas, Charlie Blake brings his gang to a remote mountain farm house belonging to his older brother Fred. Fred, whose respiratory trouble has left him weak, is bullied and beaten into sheltering the fugitives, among them the brutal Benjie and Edna. Charlie needs rest before he can move on, though his accomplices are eager to leave. He stays in love with Elizabeth, Fred's wife, with whom he had an affair years earlier, and takes an interest in her twelve-year-old son David, whom he believes he fathered. Hank, the hired hand, loves Elizabeth as well, and Fred suffers Benjie's taunting and abuse.

- Storm Fear was meant to begin filming on April 15, 1955 in Sun Valley, Idaho, but director Cornel Wilde moved the start up to April 5 because he wanted snow-topped mountains for the film.
- Cornel Wilde said weather was a big problem on the shoot, forcing the crew to adjust schedules and jump between scenes needing bright sunlight and moody conditions as clouds passed. He also gave up the pre-camera rehearsals he had planned.
