Plot summary
At John F. Kennedy High School in Columbus, Ohio, teachers bicker and a student arrives with a stab wound while word spreads of a lawsuit. A family says the school graduated their son without teaching him to read or write, and attorney Lisa Hammond, once Alex Jurel's student, collects depositions. Jurel is a veteran social studies teacher who connects with the students, though years of standing between them and the administration have worn him down. Asked to cover the duties of the school psychologist, he takes Eddie Pilikian under his wing. He and Lisa grow close. Vice principal Roger Rubell and principal Eugene Horn, along with Superintendent Donna Burke, worry about the publicity the case will bring.
