Plot summary
Charlie Chan, a famous detective, has retired from police work, and the San Francisco police ask him to help with a series of murders in the city. The partner who usually worked at his side, his son Lee Chan, does not take the case, and Lee's son, Lee Chan, Jr., comes in his place. Lee Chan, Jr., whose fiancée is Cordelia Farenington, rarely reads clues correctly, though she gives him her full support. The police treat a shadowy woman known as the Dragon Queen, an old nemesis of Chan's, as the prime suspect. Mrs. Lupowitz is among those said to be at risk.
