Plot summary
Robert Elliot is a renowned American economist in London who is about to become a government adviser. He has also been running a business espionage ring in secret with four operatives: Alex Hellman, a Foreign Office official; Bert Parsons, a masseur; Christina Larsson, a sex worker; and David Baker, a scientist. Businessman E.J. Farnsworth, who helped secure Elliot's appointment, warns him that these associates could expose his activities and urges him to have them killed. To avoid implicating himself or anyone outside, Elliot devises a scheme for the four former associates to kill one another during a single night. He visits each person and persuades them that their assigned target is about to expose them, so that person must be killed to protect their silence.
