Plot summary
Ellen Carpenter works as an astronomer in Los Angeles and shares the house in the Hollywood Hills that she and her sister Cissy inherited from their father Max, an anthropologist who spent years working in Africa. Cissy is childlike and cannot manage on her own, and she spends her days with the monkeys she calls mafus, which live in a cage their father built indoors. The animals rarely survive her violent outbursts. When Ellen refuses to bring home another one, Cissy threatens suicide, and their godfather Zom, a zoologist, arrives with an orangutan instead. Ellen is drawn to David Eastman, a colleague at the Griffith Observatory, but she hesitates to let him near her sister and the house.

- Director Karen Arthur spent time in a mental hospital as part of her research for The Mafu Cage, and shot the film rent-free in a Los Feliz mansion after persuading art galleries and museums to loan artifacts for the sets.
- Distributor Jerry Gross renamed the film Don't Ring the Doorbell and then My Sister, My Love to sell it as an exploitation film; the move failed and, along with other underperforming releases, bankrupted him.
