Plot summary
Boris Karloff became one of the defining faces of horror through his role as Frankenstein's monster, and his career in entertainment spanned six decades. Opening just before that debut, the documentary places his life and legacy in the history of horror before 1970. Actors, directors and a biographer of Karloff give their recollections, covering his popularity, the censors who attacked his films, and the influence he held into the twenty-first century. Work on it dates to the late 1990s, when it started as a passion project and drew on twenty years of research; fifty-five interviews were filmed over sixteen months in North America and London.

- Following a successful Kickstarter campaign in September 2018, Thomas Hamilton and Ron MacCloskey filmed 55 interviews and location footage in Toronto, New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Alaska and London over 16 months, wrapping in January 2020 with over 100 hours of material in the can.
- Wanting to produce the definitive documentary on Karloff, Hamilton and MacCloskey first decided on a four-hour film in two parts; the finished film runs 98 minutes, but that initial brief is why an unusually large number of interviews were filmed.
- The project began life in the late 1990s as a passion project for co-producer and co-writer Ron MacCloskey, who traveled internationally to research Karloff over 20 years while funding and the right collaborator proved elusive.
