Plot summary
J.C. Cullen has a talent for dice, and in 1957 he leaves his small town for Chicago to gamble for a living. He wins heavily at craps at the Gem Club, which George Cole owns. Mr. and Mrs. Edwards, two high-rolling gamblers, make him their pawn. In the city he is drawn to two women: Lorry Dane, a stripper married to Cole, and Aggie Donaldson, a nice girl.

- Harold Becker started the picture as director and walked away in mid-production. Ben Bolt replaced him on the suggestion of David Puttnam, Columbia's new head of production, who had taken the job after the film was already greenlit.
- The shoot overran by several weeks, and the cost fell on Diane Lane: she had to give up a theater job she had already lined up. She had worked with Matt Dillon twice before, on The Outsiders and Rumble Fish.
