Plot summary
Twenty-nine years old, Elgar Enders lives off money his wealthy parents give him. He buys a tenement in Park Slope, Brooklyn, a neighborhood that is being gentrified, intending to evict the people living there and build a luxury home for himself. The tenants are low-income, streetwise residents. Once he ventures inside the building he grows fond of them, stays on as landlord, and sets about repairing it. He rebels against the WASP upbringing he came from, and to his parents' dismay he romances two black women: Lanie, a dancer at a local black club, and Fanny Johnson, one of his tenants.
