Juliette Binoche
Biography
Juliette Binoche is a French actress who has appeared in more than 60 films, in French and English, and has won an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, and a César Award. Born in Paris, she first gained recognition through auteur directors such as Jean-Luc Godard and Jacques Doillon, then became a star in France with André Téchiné's Rendez-vous. She won the Volpi Cup and a César for Three Colours: Blue (1993) and the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for The English Patient (1996). Her role in Chocolat (2000) brought an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, and she won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress for Certified Copy (2010). Later films include Clouds of Sils Maria (2014) and The Taste of Things (2023). On stage, she appeared in Naked in London's West End and Betrayal on Broadway, earning a Tony nomination, and toured a modern dance production, in-i.

A first
Binoche became the first actress to claim the European best actress triple crown when she won at Cannes in 2010. Her earlier honors were Best Actress at Venice for Three Colors: Blue and at Berlin for The English Patient, with Certified Copy bringing the Cannes prize.
Big break
Binoche became a leading actress in 1985 through her part in André Téchiné's Rendez-vous. She took the role at short notice after Sandrine Bonnaire left the film over a scheduling conflict.
Early training
Binoche enrolled at the Conservatoire National Supérieur d'Art Dramatique, but her dislike of the curriculum led her to leave soon after. She later began lessons with acting coach Vera Gregh.
A role that slipped away
Binoche was released from Claude Berri's Lucie Aubrac six weeks into the shoot over differences about the authenticity of his script, an event she called like an earthquake to her.
