Plot summary

In 1889, Eugénie works as the cook at Dodin's home in France. Dodin is a gourmet who delights in what she prepares. They have been lovers for years but keep separate bedrooms, and she has turned down his repeated proposals of marriage. Violette helps in the kitchen, and Violette's young niece Pauline visits for a day. Dodin's friends often gather at his table to eat and to praise Eugénie's cooking. A dinner prepared by a visiting prince's chef disappoints them. Eugénie offers to train Pauline, but the girl's parents refuse. Dodin plans a menu built on pot-au-feu for the prince.
