Plot summary
Georges Laurent hosts a literary talk show, and he and Anne, his wife, live in a book-lined Paris townhouse with their twelve-year-old son, Pierrot, a swimmer. The couple has little to say to each other. One day a videotape turns up on their stoop: hours of footage of the house, as if someone were watching. A second tape follows, with a childlike drawing of a person whose mouth streams blood. Drawings of the same kind arrive at Georges' workplace and at Pierrot's school. When the Laurents take the matter to the police, the officers see nothing criminal in the tapes or the drawings. Georges and Anne wonder who could be sending them.

- For the scene in which a rooster is beheaded, a real chicken was used on camera and actually killed.
- Caché was submitted as Austria's entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 78th Academy Awards but was disqualified because French is not predominantly the language of Austria; Sony Pictures Classics co-president Michael Barker called the exclusion "unfortunate".
- While planning Caché, Michael Haneke learned about the massacre, and how information about it was withheld for years, from a television documentary on Arte, and said he was totally shocked, given France's free press, that he had never heard of the event; he worked it into his story.
- After Caché was disqualified from the Academy Awards, the Academy revised its Best Foreign Language Film rules so as to emphasise the filmmaker's origin over the country's language; Haneke's 2012 French-language Amour then won the award for Austria.
- In Caché's final scene, Lester Makedonsky and Walid Afkir speak dialogue Haneke scripted but chose not to publish and left inaudible, instructing the actors never to disclose it.
- The interiors of the Laurent residence and Majid's apartment were shot in Vienna, with stairs from Paris replicated in Vienna; Haneke said most of the filming likely took place in Vienna.
