Plot summary
In August 2010, thirty-three men are working at the San José Mine near Copiapó, Chile, when the tunnels give way. The owner had dismissed signs that the mine was unstable, and the cave-in closes the only route in. The miners reach a rescue chamber, where they find a radio that does not work, an empty medical kit, and almost no food. Mario Sepúlveda takes the lead, rationing what little they have and trying to hold the group together as fear and hunger build. Above ground, the mining company makes no attempt to reach them, and relatives gather at the mine gates. The Chilean government steps in and orders drilling to locate the men.

- On 17 June 2013 Jennifer Lopez was announced as the lead of The 33, but she left the film over scheduling conflicts with American Idol, and Juliette Binoche replaced her.
- The film changes the real rescue: Florencio Ávalos, not Álex Vega, was the first miner brought up, and Vega's wife was not pregnant at the time, as the film shows.
- The 33 was the first film to receive the Colombian Film Commission's incentive, worth 40% for film services and 20% for film logistics services of what was spent in the country.
