Plot summary
The Janjira nuclear plant in Japan collapses in 1999 when a tremor breaches its reactor, and supervisor Joe Brody loses his wife in the disaster; the surrounding zone is sealed. Fifteen years later his son Ford, a Navy explosive ordnance disposal officer, returns to San Francisco to his wife Elle and their son Sam, then flies to Japan when Joe is arrested for trespassing inside the quarantine zone. Joe has spent the years since the meltdown chasing its cause and persuades Ford to help him recover data from their old house, where the air proves safe to breathe. Guards take the two to the plant ruins, where Monarch scientists Ishiro Serizawa and Vivienne Graham study a giant chrysalis that has fed on the reactors and emitted electromagnetic pulses.

- Godzilla franchise actor Akira Takarada was cast as an immigration officer, but his scene was cut from the final film. Edwards said cutting it was his "biggest regret", and Takarada is still listed in the closing credits.
- Bryan Cranston had to wear a wig for his scenes because he finished shooting Breaking Bad only days before filming Godzilla.
- The role of Ford was reportedly offered to Joseph Gordon-Levitt in 2012, but he declined; by 2013 Henry Cavill, Scoot McNairy and Caleb Landry Jones made up the shortlist before Legendary took an interest in Taylor-Johnson.
