Plot summary
In Alsace in 1967, Van der Beck's School of Housekeeping and Good Manners trains teenage girls in housekeeping, good manners and how to serve a husband. Paulette Van der Beck heads the school; her husband Robert, his sister Gilberte and the nun-teacher Marie-Thérèse work there with her. At the start of the school year the staff look over the new arrivals and notice that one of the girls is red-headed, and wonder whether the year will be jinxed. Robert dies suddenly. Going through his belongings, Paulette and the staff find letters showing the school is close to bankruptcy. The bank manager, André Grunvald, says Robert had already borrowed too much, and suggests Paulette put the school in her own name and take out another loan.
