Plot summary
In the late eighteenth century, Mr. Earnshaw finds an orphaned boy on the streets of Liverpool and brings him to Wuthering Heights, the family farmhouse on the English moors, to be raised alongside his own children. The boy, Heathcliff, and Earnshaw's daughter Cathy grow up with a bond between them. After Mr. Earnshaw dies, Cathy's older brother Hindley takes over the household and, resentful of the favor Heathcliff had received, turns him into a stable boy and sends him to live in the stables. As the two grow into young adulthood, they meet Edgar and Isabella Linton, a brother and sister of higher social class who live at nearby Thrushcross Grange. Cathy marries Edgar, and Heathcliff vows to win her back.

- Paramount Pictures had to put Emily Brontë's name in the film's title because Samuel Goldwyn Studio, later sold to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, owned the rights to the plain title Wuthering Heights through the copyright on its 1939 film version.
- Ralph Fiennes's role as Heathcliff opened doors for him to play Amon Goeth in Schindler's List, with director Steven Spielberg saying he liked Fiennes for Goeth because of his "dark sexuality."
