Plot summary
A haircut is all Eric Packer wants, and he wants it from the barber who has trimmed his hair for years, on the far side of Manhattan. He is twenty-eight, a self-made multi-billionaire currency speculator, and he makes the trip in the back of a stretch limousine fitted out as an office. The city is jammed: a presidential visit, the funeral of a rap artist he admired, and an anarchist protest whose participants carry dead rats. Business associates and acquaintances pass through the car, among them his wife of a few weeks, Elise, whom he meets in her taxi, in a bookstore and outside a theater; the two barely know each other. Word reaches him that someone wants him dead. His fortune turns on a currency trade that is going wrong.
