Plot summary
On the French islands of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon in 1849, two sailors rescued from the sea get drunk and kill a man. Both are arrested, tried and sentenced, and one of them dies in custody. The other, Néel, is condemned to the guillotine, but the little colony owns neither a guillotine nor an executioner, so he must wait. He is kept in the barracks by the Captain, a devoted husband to his childless wife, whom the islanders know as Madame La. She involves herself with him and works to reform him, and as he labors and does good deeds the islanders begin to respect him. The authorities, however, insist that he must die.
