Will Francis is a landscape architect in London, living with his girlfriend Liv and her autistic daughter Bea, whose irregular habits and unsocial behavior strain the household. His firm's offices in King's Cross are burgled twice; the thieves get in through the climbing skills of Mirsad, known as Miro, a teenage refugee from Bosnia. Will and his partner Sandy keep watch at night, and Will gets to know Oana, a prostitute who works the area. Following Miro home one night, Will finds the flat the boy shares with his mother Amira, a Bosnian seamstress, and chooses not to call the police.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Breaking and Entering was Anthony Minghella's first original screenplay since his 1990 debut Truly, Madly, Deeply, and the last feature he made before his death in 2008.
- No usable building could be found near King's Cross for the architects' office, so the whole thing was recreated inside an old foundry on Dace Road by the Old Ford Lock, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
